Little is known about the history of Bahia de Banderas, covering the coasts of Nayarit and Jalisco. This is due to the fact that in the majority of its existence the region has been occupied by native tribes in the area that no written records of their activities. It is known that Bay was crossed by the tribes of the Nahuatl affiliation during hispilgrimage to the Valley of Mexico. Archaeological evidence also proves the presence of Aztec and Toltec Indians in the area of Higuera Blanca, Punta de Mita, Sayulita,San Juan de Abajo and Valle de Banderas. Unfortunately, since none of these tribes took a record written, is difficult determine who came first to the region.
